Survey on Energy Efficiency in Turkey

Global climate change is one important and complex problem challenging the world community today and the next generations. The impact of the climate change on the nature and human kind will be tremendous: natural catastrophies, further hunger crises, water scarcity to mention only some.

Although the international community is well aware of these consequences, and although there exists a vast literature on the diffrerent consequences of the climate change on the nature and human kind, there is still a lack of political on the side of the governments to take the relevant and necessary steps against further climate change. Besides efforts against an increase of CO2-emmissions, the development of intelligent energy strategies based on an intelligent mixture of renewables and energy efficiency will the answer towards this urgent matter. The latest after the catastrophe of Fukushima in spring 2011, nuclear energy can no more seriously presented as part of an intelligent energy strategy answering the needs of climate change.

This study was conducted within the project “Strengthening Energy Efficiency Capacities and Networks of CSOs and Municipalities – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Serbia and Turkey”.

Survey on Energy Efficiency in Serbia

This study, conducted within the project “Strengthening Energy Efficiency Capacities and Networks of CSOs and Municipalities – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Serbia and Turkey”, is intended for those who would like to get acquainted with some general information regarding the energy efficiency state in Serbia, the possibilities for future improvement on that field, the conformation with the European, and furthermore, global standards, as well as the potentials for investment in various energy efficiency projects.

It provides basic overview of the necessary data processed in an “easy to handle” way. It is not rare for some concepts to be presented using terms and language that only experts in a particular field are familiar with. Authors of this publication have a strong opinion that this should not be the case for energy efficiency, and it should, moreover must be presented in clear and unambiguous way for the commons, in order to avoid potential delays in the implementation of some useful or necessary activities, projects, plans, programs, concepts and ideas.

Project objectives and activities

Objectives

The European Union and the future member countries are confronted with the task to establish policies to achieve a comprehensive policy towards the international economic crisis and climate change. Energy Efficiency plays a prominent role in achieving the European climate protection targets.

In line with the EU targets, we aim to contribute to the promotion and improvement of energy efficiency in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Turkey.

Challenges

Energy efficiency plays an increasing role in intelligent and future oriented energy policies. The involvement of local and national stakeholders in Turkey, Serbia and BiH is one of the key challanges considering the relevance of producing sustainable energy action plans. There is a lack of carbon mitigation targets and national adaptation agendas in order to keep the climate change within safe limits. On the other hand the concrete climate protection measures require more and more local government participation.

Activities

As a fundamental part of our project a survey on energy efficiency politics in Turkey and Serbia will be accomplished. These surveys will provide relevant information for civil society organisations (CSOs) and local authorities, the main stakeholders in the field of energy efficiency. In October 2010 we will present the results of these studies at public meetings in Serbia and Turkey in order to raise the awareness and to strenghten the knowledge among the public and decision makers.
